The Campus Crime Stoppers Committee presented St. Lawrence College with two donations totaling $500 on the Cornwall campus yesterday.
The committee – comprised of twelve first and second year Police Foundations students – donated $150 to the Student Food Bank and $350 to the Student Emergency Fund. The money was raised by the Campus Crime Stoppers Committee over the past year through fundraising events on campus, such as a BBQ and bake sales.
"Since the money comes from students and faculty at fundraising events, we thought it should be going back to the college to benefit the students," said Carolyn Taylor, professor and interim coordinator of the Police Foundations program, who acts as faculty advisor to the Campus Crime Stoppers Committee. "The students on the committee felt very strongly about giving back to the college community."
Campus Crime Stoppers Committee President David Nebbs presented the donation to Marg Hogan, Manager, Student Services, and Christina Russell, Cornwall Student Union President, who accepted the donation on behalf of the student body. Cornwall Campus Dean Don Fairweather and Betty Ann Villeneuve, advisor to the committee and board member of the Seaway Valley Crime Stoppers, were also on hand for the presentation.
The Student Emergency Fund, which assists students with unexpected financial needs that come up during their academic pursuits, and the Student Food Bank are available to help students in need and are overseen by Student Services.
"We need to ensure we get the word out that these services are available." said Marg Hogan. "Grocery cards, transportation costs if a student needs to travel in the case of a family emergency or smaller unexpected expenses...… these are the kinds of things the Student Emergency Fund can help with."
In addition to fundraising activities, the Campus Crime Stoppers Committee works to raise awareness about preventing crime on campus and the Crime Stoppers organization.
